Cry/ Weep / Sob / Wail / Whimper

  • Cry: khóc vì đau đớn, bất hạnh, buồn khổ, hạnh phúc

People in the street wept/cried with joy when peace was announced.

  • Sob: nức nở, thổn thức

I found her sobbing in the bedroom because she had broken her favorite doll.

  • Wail: khóc từng tràng dài trong đau khổ, than khó, kể lể như khi khóc cho cái chết của người thân, khóc cho số phận hẩm hiu

The little girl was wailing miserably at the funeral.

  • Whimper: khóc thút thít, rên rỉ.

I said she couldn’t have ice cream and she started to whimper.

Cure / Heal / Treat

Cure, Heal và Treat đều có nghĩa là chữa bệnh nhưng chúng khác nhau về cấu trúc

  • Heal sth

The plaster cast helps to heal the broken bone. 

  • Treat sb for an illness

He is being treated for a rare skin disease. 

  • Cure sb of an illness

Some people try to hypnotism to cure themselves of addictions.

Customer / Client / Guest / Passenger 

  • Customer: khách hàng, người mua hàng / dịch vụ từ cửa hàng, công ty

Mary is a regular customer at the hairdressing salon.

  • Client: khách hàng (người sử dụng dịch vụ tư vấn, pháp lý, bảo hiểm, … từ các chuyên gia, tổ chức)

He’s a sports agent and has a lot of basketball players as clients

  • Guest: khách hàng, người thuê, khách mời

150 guests were invited to the wedding. 

  • Passenger: hành khách

Two passenger trains were involved in the accident. 

Deceptive / Deceitful / Dishonest 

  • Deceptive: dối trá (bị lừa bởi vẻ bề ngoài của cái gì)

It’s deceptive – in the picture she posted on her Facebook, she looked really beautiful, but in reality, she was very ugly!

  • Deceitful / dishonest: lừa đảo (không trung thực, che giấu sự thật)

Such an act would have been deceitful and irresponsible. 

Defuse / Diffuse 

  • Defuse: xoa dịu, tháo ngòi nổ

The two groups will meet next week to try to defuse the tension. 

  • Diffuse: lan tỏa

Television is a powerful means of diffusing knowledge.
